The South Valley Tour from Cusco is a cultural tour lasting approximately 7 hours that visits three iconic sites southeast of the city: Tipón, Pikillaqta, and Andahuaylillas. The tour offers a chance to explore the Inca hydraulic engineering at Tipón, the urban planning of the Wari culture at Pikillaqta, and the colonial religious and artistic heritage of Andahuaylillas, before returning to Cusco the same day.

Overview

The Southern Valley of Cusco brings together three different stages of regional history in a short tour. Tipón showcases the development of Inca hydraulic engineering through terraces, canals, fountains, and reservoirs that are still part of the archaeological site.

Pikillaqta offers a glimpse into the pre-Inca period and provides insight into one of the main settlements associated with the Wari culture in the Cusco region. The tour ends in Andahuaylillas, a traditional town known for its colonial church and its religious artistic heritage.

Due to its duration and the relatively short walks it involves, this tour is a great option for travelers interested in archaeology, history, and architecture who want to explore a part of Cusco beyond the traditional Sacred Valley circuit.

Itinerary

Day 1: South Valley – Tipon – Pikillacta and Andahuaylillas – 7 hour tour – in group

On this day we will have an exclusive adventure. We will visit the picturesque and little explored South Valley of Cusco. We will begin the tour in Quispicanchis where we will visit the impressive archaeological complex of Tipón, an important center of worship where the Incas worshiped water, one of the elements of nature considered sacred in the Andean view, which flows through canals and passes through terraces and waterfalls.

Next we will go to the Pikillacta archaeological complex, the Huari urban center that dates back to pre-Inca times. You will be able to see that the constructions are quite different from the Inca constructions.

Finally, we will visit the village of Andahuaylillas, where we will see its important and fantastic 16th century church known as the Sistine Chapel of America due to the large number of paintings on its walls and ceiling. It has an organ decorated with angels and cherubs and large murals by famous artist Tadeo Escalante.

Before we return, you will have free time for a brief optional visit to the Sacred Stones Museum. At the end of the tour we will return to Cusco where we will drop you off at your hotel.
