Itinerary

Day 1: Airport - Hotel Cusco

Our staff will be waiting for you at the Cusco Airport to take you directly to your hotel. Just let us know your exact arrival time and flight number. Here, you will be welcomed with a hot cup of the famous coca tea. You will have a free afternoon to acclimatize, as the city of Cusco Peru sits at a Cusco altitude of 3,399 m (11,151 feet).

Please be prepared for the fact that the high elevation of Cusco Peru will make you feel more tired than normal upon arrival, so we recommend that you take the afternoon easy to manage the Cusco elevation. If you are feeling fine, enjoy a warm cup of coca tea, which will help you acclimatize quicker.

It is recommended to take a light walk around the historic center, maybe to see The Plaza De Armas and admire the incredible colonial houses and buildings built on top of ancient Inca foundations. It is important to drink a lot of water at this high altitude to assist your acclimatization process. For the first few days, eat light meals as your digestion will be slower. Later on, you will have the opportunity to try the famous guinea pig, a revered dish eaten on special occasions in the Andes.

One thing you must not miss on one of your free days is a visit to the “Centro QOSQO” of Native Art—a show demonstrating traditional dances, costumes, and music of the region. The show begins at 6:00 PM, but we recommend arriving 40 minutes early. If you have the “boleta turistica”, you will have free access to this show.

We suggest a visit to the Plaza de Armas with its colonial and Inca temples, The Regional History Museum, The Contemporary Art Museum, the Museum of The Qoricancha, and the Museum of Popular Art. These historic sites will make your Cusco Peru trip an unforgettable cultural experience.

Day 2: Cusco City Tour (The Cathedral, The Qoricancha, Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay) – 5 hr tour

Today, we will visit some of the most famous archaeological sites in Cusco Peru and its surrounding area. We will begin with a visit to the Cusco Cathedral on the Plaza De Armas, the principal church of this imperial city built on the foundations of the Inca Wiracocha temple. It displays over 300 paintings from the Cusco school of art.

Next, we head to the Qoricancha (“Temple of Gold”), the primary temple constructed by the Incas. We will then travel just outside the city to the archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman, famous for its giant megalithic stones weighing over 150 tonnes. We will continue to the nearby archaeological site of Q’enqo, a holy place dedicated to Mother Earth, followed by the Inca fortress of Puka Pukara (“Red Castle”). Our final stop is Tambomachay, a sacred temple dedicated to an ancient water cult. Afterward, we will return to Cusco Peru and drop you off at your hotel or the Plaza de Armas.

The City Tour begins in the afternoon. We suggest visiting nearby museums and colonial houses around the Plaza de Armas during your free time.

Next, we visit the colonial town of Maras, which preserves its traditional architecture and stone doorways. Next, we visit the Pre-Inca Wari urban center of Pikillacta to observe architecture distinctly different from Inca stonework. Finally, we visit the village of Andahuaylillas to tour its 16th-century church, known as the Sistine Chapel of America, before a brief stop at the Sacred Stones Museum. What is the altitude of Cusco, Peru?

Cusco is located at approximately 3,399 meters (11,151 feet) above sea level. Because of this high elevation, some travelers may feel more tired than usual when they arrive. The first day of this itinerary includes free time to rest and begin acclimatizing. Taking it easy, drinking plenty of water and eating light meals can help you adjust to the altitude.

How should I prepare for the altitude in Cusco?

The best way to prepare for Cusco's altitude is to take your first day slowly and allow time to acclimatize. This tour provides free time on arrival day so you can rest before beginning the scheduled excursions. We recommend drinking plenty of water, eating light meals and starting with gentle activities, such as a short walk around the Plaza de Armas, if you feel comfortable. Coca tea is traditionally offered to visitors in Cusco. If you develop significant symptoms or feel unwell, seek medical advice rather than trying to push through them.

How long is the guided tour of Machu Picchu?

The guided visit to Machu Picchu lasts approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. During this time, your guide will accompany you through the citadel and show you its main areas. You will travel by bus from Aguas Calientes to the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu and return to Aguas Calientes in the afternoon, with free time for lunch before your train journey back toward Cusco.
