1. Is the 7 Lakes of Ausangate hike difficult?
It is moderately difficult, but it takes place at high altitude, so it may feel more challenging than the distance or elevation gain would suggest. It is recommended that you be in good enough physical condition to hike for several hours and that you have already acclimated to the altitude.
2. Do I need to acclimatize before taking the Ausangate 7 Lakes tour?
Yes, because the route takes place at high altitude, it’s advisable to spend a few days in Cusco or another high-altitude area before the hike. This allows your body to begin adjusting and reduces the risk of altitude-related discomfort. Acclimatization is one of the top recommendations emphasized by tour operators specializing in this route.
3. What time does the tour start and end?
Pickup from your hotel is at approximately 4:00 a.m. After the drive and the hike, the return to Cusco is scheduled for around 6:30 p.m., although the schedule may vary depending on the group’s pace, the weather, and trail conditions.
4. Where does the hike to the 7 Lakes of Ausangate begin?
The hike begins in the community of Pacchanta, southeast of Cusco and near the snow-capped Ausangate mountain. The drive from Cusco takes approximately three and a half hours before the hike begins.
5. How long does the 7 Lagoons hike take?
The hike through the lagoons takes approximately three and a half hours, not including transportation to and from Cusco, meals, or stops along the tour.
6. Are breakfast and lunch included?
Yes. The tour includes breakfast and lunch, as well as transportation, a guide, entrance fees, a first-aid kit, and emergency oxygen, as specified in the itinerary.
7. What should I bring on the 7 Lagoons of Ausangate tour?
We recommend bringing warm, layered clothing, a waterproof jacket or rain poncho, hiking boots, water, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a small backpack. High-altitude weather can change quickly, so it’s best to be prepared for both cold temperatures and sun exposure.
8. Can I visit the Pacchanta hot springs after the hike?
Yes. After returning to Pacchanta, you have the option to enjoy the hot springs before the return trip to Cusco. This activity is optional; those who prefer not to visit the hot springs can spend their free time in the area.
